About the project

ALBERT ROAD SCHOOL RAMSEY

Broadcast 11.45 am Monday July 10th 2006

“Dear Podcaster...

Further to the last SSNM and recent Head’s Forum, below is some background information for the up and coming Radio Skeet...

The slots

Manx Radio are currently offering 15 slots during the week. There will be three items per day over the 5 days.

The slots are Monday July 10th to Friday 14th July:

  1. Between 9.00 and 12.00 on “Talking Heads” with Dan Davies

  2. Between 13.00 and 15.30 during “The Supplement” with Bob Harrison

  3. Between 15.30 and 17.30 during “Overdrive” with Chris Williams

All contributions will also appear on the “Radio Skeet” Website. In the event that we receive more than 15 completed programs, the best will be chosen to go on air. (I’m hopeful though that if the contributions are as good as I hope they’ll be, then maybe Manx Radio might be able to squeeze a few more in.)

Content

Each contribution must be 5 minutes in length - give or take a couple of seconds either way. Anything which is too long will have to be re-edited and resubmitted. The content is in the form of a mini-magazine programme and will comprise:

  1. Intro Jingle (with voice over) News items

  2. Main Feature (theme environment)

  3. Sport or human interest Hand over (with voice over) (jingle) Total: 5m (FIXED)

  4. (15s approx) (1m approx) (2m 30s approx) (1 min approx) (15s approx)

The exact times are for guidance only and can be varied - but the 5 minutes overall time is fixed. The topic ‘environment’ is open to the loosest interpretation so be imaginative - check with me if in doubt. If you want to do something else entirely - email me.

The Intro should begin with the words:

  1. “Hello - my name is .... and welcome to Radio Skeet from ... School.”

The contribution should end with the words:

  1. “That’s it from Radio Skeet for the moment, this is .... from ... School handing you back to the Manx Radio Studio.”

(This can be varied if required to suit an intro/outro from joint presenters.)

Quality

This is critical, with top quality content and audio paramount. Clear presenting and technically top notch recording and editing are essential. No ‘pops’, no ‘clipping’. etc. This is easy to achieve with a little care. I have been asked to request that background music is kept low, as the station receives complaints from listeners.

Each School taking part can get a free Samson CO1U studio microphone and stand. These should be used to record voice-overs, interviews and so on. If you have not received yours - please contact me. They are in short supply nationally, but I am assured by the UK suppliers that we’ll have all we need by the end of the month.

Submissions should be made as mp3 files, and these can be emailed to me via First Class at any time if you would like an opinion as to whether its the right kind of thing.

Copyright

No copyright material can be included. All the Apple Garageband content is non-copyright and we suggest choosing from the 400+ royalty-free loops contained in the Podcast module of Garageband 3. Original songs/compositions are of course fine.

Training

The Primary ‘X’ Team are up-to-speed with all this and are available free-of-charge to advise on this. Secondary schools have an opportunity to receive training on the forthcoming June 1st INSET day at QEii for ICT/D&T staff, were there is a ‘podcasting’ option which will be geared up for Radio Skeet contributions.

Dates

To allow Manx Radio to be sure that there will be sufficient content for the week, we would ask that the closure date for submission to me of the completed mp3 is the by :

4.00pm on Wednesday June 21st

And finally...

Everyone involved is really looking forwarded to hearing what gets sent in. If this goes well, it’ll be a world-beating first.

In future, Manx Radio will be keen to encourage additional submissions of other recorded work by arrangement for broadcast giving young broadcasters, editors, musicians, writers etc. a superb showcase for their talents.

Primary schools can liaise directly with their X-Team rep, or feel free to email me for any further information you need.

That’s all for now...”

Content 2008

Each Skeet must be 5 minutes in length – give or take a couple of seconds either way. Anything which is too long will have to be re-edited and resubmitted. The content is in the form of a mini-magazine programme and will comprise:

  1. Intro Jingle (with voice over) (15s approx.)
    School News items (1m approx.)

  2. Main Feature (theme Past memories in line with the Tell Me Project which in this case can be interpreted in its broadest sense) (2m 30s approx.)

  3. The Vox Pop -Where will I be in 50 years time? (1 min approx.)

  4. Hand over (with voice over) (jingle) (15s approx.)

The following is taken from a letter dated May 2006 sent out to all schools about the first series of skeets. The format remained similar throughout...

Pre-broadcast promos

The week before the broadcasts short promos - also recorded by the schools - were aired. The format was:

  1. Hi ! I'm (name)...

  2. ...and I'm (name)

  3. from (school name here). [together]
...and we're here to tell you that RADIO SKEET is happening - NEXT WEEK - on Manx Radio...

  4. News and views created entirely by children, using their own school computers with the latest podcast technology.
